Iran's membership in Shanghai Cooperation Organization send positive signal - expert

TEHRAN, Iran, Sep. 20

Trend:
Iran's permanent membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) would send a positive signal to the world about the country's interest in exporting energy, said an expert in the field of energy, Trend reports citing ILNA.

Behrouz Namdari has indicated that eight member countries in the SCO are mostly imported energy and Iran could be an energy exporter and would join the global market.

"Iran currently has gas pipeline contract with Pakistan, India which is a traditional customer of Iran's oil is another destination for Iran's gas export, therefore, the SCO membership will bring us closer to economic interests and we will reach better understandings in a more appropriate context," he explained.

The expert has expressed hope that accepting Iran as a permanent member in the SCO would send this signal that Iran is interested to reduce tensions in the international community.

"Although until sanctions are lifted or reduced Iran's problems would not be solved but the membership would be a positive message to the world about Iran's intentions," he emphasized.

Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit is more about security than economy and Iran can solve its problems with the international community on this premise.

Iran's permanent membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was approved during the Iranian President's visit to Tajikistan.
