BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 29. The increase in trade turnover between Iran and Turkmenistan requires the introduction of preferential trade, Chairman of Iran's Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mining, and Agriculture Samad Hassanzadeh said, Trend reports.
He made the remark during the meeting with the Chairman of Turkmenistan's Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mergen Gurdov.
He noted that the chambers of commerce and industry of both countries should make efforts to apply preferential trade.
Hassanzadeh stated that Iran's non-oil exports to Turkmenistan amount to $450 million, and imports of non-oil products from Turkmenistan amount to $38 million. This is far below the potential of the two countries.
Hassanzadeh emphasized that efforts should be made and practical steps should be taken to increase trade turnover between the two countries.
The official noted that both countries have great potential in the fields of tourism and health tourism. Additionally, Iran has potential in the fields of startups, industry, mining, and agriculture, and Iran can fulfill Turkmenistan's needs in these fields.
“Iran currently buys gas from Turkmenistan. This trade is carried out by the state. However, with the support of the Turkmenistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Iran's private sector can purchase gas from Turkmenistan if there is a free opportunity in this area,” he noted.
During the meeting, Chairman of the Turkmenistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mergen Gurdov stated that the Turkmenistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry is working to facilitate trade with Iran. Turkmenistan has great potential for exports and imports. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan is ready to take steps to develop trade between the two countries.
Meanwhile, according to statistics from the Iranian Customs Administration, the country's non-oil exports to Turkmenistan last Iranian year (from March 21, 2023, through March 19, 2024) amounted to approximately 1.36 million tons worth more than $445 million.
To note, Iran imported 31,000 tons of products worth about $38.7 million from Turkmenistan in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2023, through March 19, 2024).
