BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 28. Ayatollah Abdul Karim Abedini, the representative of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Qazvin province, has resigned from his position as the Imam of Friday prayers in Qazvin.

According to Trend, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on this development on Tuesday.

Abedi initiated the request for his own resignation. In his statement, he indicated that he had occupied this role for ten years. Nonetheless, the factors contributing to his departure are still not publicly available.

To note, Seyyed Jafar Aghai Marian, the Charge d'affaires of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Azerbaijan, was summoned to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs on January 25.

The ministry stated that rather than issuing apologies for the controversial comments made by Imam of Friday prayers in Ardabil, Ayatollah Seyed Hasan Ameli, at a gathering in Ardabil, the initiative to back Ameli and the participation of various religious leaders, including the Imam of Qazvin, in actions against Azerbaijan were deemed unacceptable.

The ministry underscored that these actions jeopardize bilateral relations, necessitating the implementation of measures to avert them.

The Iranian Charge d'Affaires expressed regret for the unpleasant statements and actions and promised to report the matter to the relevant authorities in his country.
