(zaman) - In return for cooperation with multinational forces in Iraq, Syria will reportedly ask American help in securing the return of the Golan Heights.
According to news published by the Sunday Times of London, the return of the Golan Heights, Syrian territory occupied by Israel since 1967, will be Syria's primary demand for its possible cooperation in Iraq, reports Trend.
Syrian help would not come cheaply. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has also made it clear that any Syrian cooperation would depend on an announcement of a detailed timetable for the American pullout of Iraq.
Shaul Bakhash, a Middle East expert from George Mason University, said: Neither Iran nor Syria will do a favor for the U.S. without wanting something back and what both countries want are things that the U.S. is not willing to give them.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the New York Times reported that the Iraq Study Group, which had proposed a gradual withdrawal from Iraq, met with Iranian and Syrian authorities.
