The first Iranian-made cryogenics pump will be installed in phase 17 and 18 of the South Pars gas field, said the managing director of Iran Industrial Pumps Group, Mehdi Farajpourvand.

He added cryogenic pumps are used in gas refineries for pumping liquefied propane and butane to tankers, Iran's Fars news agency reported on Jan. 21.

Some 96 cryogenics pumps are required in the South Pars gas field, he said, adding that manufacturing pumps for oil and gas, water and power industries domestically will save $400 million annually.

The Iranian-made pumps are equal to European-made products in quality and are better compared than Asian-made rivals, he noted.

A cryogenic pump is a vacuum pump that traps gases and vapors by condensing them on a cold surface. They are sometimes used to block particular contaminants, for example in front of a diffusion pump to trap backstreaming oil.

Iran is currently producing 300 million cubic meters of gas from the South Pars per day.

The South Pars gas field, divided into 28 phases, is located in the Persian Gulf on the common border between Iran and Qatar. It is estimated that the field contains 14 trillion cubic meters of gas and 18 billion barrels of condensate.

By completion of all phases of the South Pars gas field, it will produce 650,000 barrels of gas condensates, 6.7 million tons of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and four million tons of ethane per day.
