While the average international share of renewable energies in the energy basket is over 10 percent, the number is less than 0.01 percent for Iran, said Ali Mohammad Shaeri, head of the Environment and Sustainable Development Staff of the Tehran Municipality.
Unfortunately, the abundance of fossil fuels in Iran has made us think less about new and renewable energy forms, whereas the world is moving toward using new energy, he said.
The official added that the average international usage of new energy is 10 to 15 percent, while European countries as leaders in this field draw over 20 percent of their energy basket from new energy forms, SHANA news agency reported May 26.
Commenting on Tehran Municipality programs for using new energy, he said that Iran 's Second Development Plan - which ended in 2003 - emphasized reducing energy consumption in parks across Tehran as well as providing 20 percent of the consumed energy from new energy sources.
At least 70 percent of lighting energy and 100 percent of the energy using for warming water in newly-founded parks will be drawn from new energy sources, he added.
The consumption of liquid fuel including diesel oil and fuel oil in Iran over one week, ending on May 22 amounted for 730.6 million liters.
Over 83 percent of total electricity output in Iran is generated in thermal power plants, fueled by diesel oil, fuel oil and natural gas.
The country used 1,271 billion cubic feet of gas, as well as 28 billion liters of gas oil and fuel oil for power generation during the fiscal year, ended on March 2014.
