Iran is importing worth $2.5 billion of drugs every year, according to the Iranian Parliament's Healthcare Commission Chairman Hosseinali Shahriari.

He expressed pity that only three to four percent of drugs now available in the Iranian market are domestically made, ICANA news agency reported April 2.

A proper management over drugs will make the industry 50 to 60 percent independent, he said.

The official underlined that Iran's pharmaceutical industry has suffered greatly from the longs years of economic sanctions that were lifted just this year.

He further added that Iran is also one of the world's greatest importers of medical equipment.
