The Iranian administration has removed ban on the import of sugar, said Hassan Abbasi Maroufan, deputy head of the Government Trading Corporation (GTC).

Iran has started issuing license for gradual import of 700,000 tons of sugar, Abbasi Maroufan said, Fars news agency reported Jan. 18.

He further said that the country’s sugar storage is enough to meet the demand for five months.

Iranians consume around 2.2 million tons of sugar per year, he said, forecasting that about 1.62 million tons of sugar will be produced inside the country in the current year.

Iran plans to import 600,000 tons of sugar from Brazil from March 2017, Abbasi Maroufan said.

In June 2016 the decision by Iranian government to ban importing sugar into the country led some chocolate manufacturers to halt production due to lack of the principal ingredients.

Iranian government imposes ban on rice and sugar imports in various periods to support domestic producers.
