Major French banks are still cautious to deal with Iran due to the possible problems with the US, Iran’s ambassador to France Ali Ahani said.

“During President Hassan Rouhani’s trip to France last January, some 35 MoUs were signed and French Coface insurance company (Compagnie Française d'Assurance) is ready to cover the deals between Iranian and French companies, but the major banks are cautious,” he said, Embassy’s official website reported.

The US fined dozen of European banks, charged with illegal deals with Iran during the last several years, including the Paris-based BNP Paribas which had to pay about $9 billion to US for sanctions violations.

The sanctions on Iran were removed in January 2016, but some of the US sanctions on Iran, including those related to US dollar, are still in force.

Despite sanctions, French giants Total and Airbus have signed big deals with Iran since last January.
