Iran imported worth $1.6 billion cars during the first eleven months of the current Iranian fiscal year (which started March 20). The figure increased by 62.4% compared to the same period of the year before.

This counted for a number of 61,245 cars, a 49.6% year-on-year increase, the Customs Administration of Iran reported March 8.

The majority of the cars, 68 percent of them, were imported from the United Arab Emirates. This amounts to over 42,000 cars.

The value of auto parts imported during the same period stood at $700 million. The weight of the total imports (cars and parts) was put at 219,000 tons.

In December 2016, the government announced that only dealers that have official permits from the parent companies are legally allowed to import cars. The impact of the ruling is expected to manifest itself in the coming months.
