30,000 tons of tea smuggled into Iran annually

Each year about 30,000 tons of tea is smuggled into Iran, Head of Iran Tea Organization Mohammad Vali Ruzbahan said.

This amount is equal to more than half of the illegally imported tea which stands at 50,000 tons a year, IRIB news agency reported April 29.

According to Ruzbahan, the Tea Organization is taking measures to improve domestic production of tea.
One of the measures is that the organization provides farmers with loans to prune the trees, he said, adding the measure has increase the pace of reviving abandoned tea farms.

Over the past few years some 4,000 hectares of tea farms were that had been abandoned were revived, he noted.
