Trend:

Iran’s banana import has witnessed a significant fall during the first two months of the current year, according to the Customs Administration data.

Iran imported 87,000 tons of banana in the two-month period from March 20 to May 21, 33 percent less year-on-year.

The value of the imported banana amounted to $85.9 million, registering a fall by 13 percent compared to the same period of the preceding year.

Iran imposes a 15-percent customs tariff on banana import.

Banana was among the top 20 goods Iran imported in the last fiscal year (ended March 20, 2018). The Islamic Republic imported $544 million worth of banana in the period.

Iran imported 1.314 million tons of agricultural and food products, worth $706 million in the same period, which indicates that the Islamic Republic experienced a negative balance in trade of agricultural and food industry products, according to the data released by Iran’s Agriculture Ministry.

The value of Iran’s agricultural and food imports increased by 14 percent to $9.8 billion in the last fiscal year. Over half of Iran’s imports in this sector falls on corn fodder, rice, soybeans, meat and meal.

Iranian officials say the country’s annual agricultural output stands at 120 million tons, worth $80 million. The figure includes 82 million tons of crops, 20 million tons of horticulture products, 14 million tons of livestock, and over one million tons of fishery products.
