Presently, eight million Iranians are people with diabetes mellitus, Chairman of the Iranian Diabetes Society Shakur Umidi said.
Seventy percent of those people do not know about their illness, he said.
Umidi said that 10 percent of Iran's population are people with diabetes mellitus.
Only 3.600 million of eight million Iranians with diabetes mellitus have been identified and know about their illness, he added.
Umidi said that more than 4 million Iranians are unaware of their illness.
That is why diabetes mellitus is called a calm disease, he added.
He added that on average, sugar consumption rate in Iran is five times more than the global average.
