Transit via Iran's Astara border terminal increases

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 9. The transit of products through the Astara Border Terminal of the province of Gilan, located in northern Iran, increased by 29 percent in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2023, through March 19, 2024) compared to the previous year (from March 21, 2022, through March 20, 2023), head of Iran's Astara border terminal, Murtaza Azimi said, Trend reports.

According to Azimi, about 2.3 million tons of products (flour, wheat, and potatoes) were transported through the Astara border terminal in Iran last Iranian year. The products were transported by more than 135,000 trucks.

Azimi added that about 1.76 million tons of products were transported by more than 120,000 trucks through the Astara Border Terminal the previous year.

He stated that 1.2 million tons of products were exported through Iran's Astara terminal last year. The exported products were mainly fruits and vegetables, ceramics, various types of cereals, and so on.

"The commissioning of the new border terminal in Astara led to an increase in transit. Moreover, the new border terminal has largely solved the problem of traffic jams in Astara city," he noted.

Meanwhile, a new road bridge between Azerbaijan and Iran over Astarachay was put into operation on December 30, 2023. It is reported that 5.8 million euros were spent on the construction of the new bridge. The foundation of the new bridge between Azerbaijan and Iran through Astarachay was laid on January 25, 2022. The bridge has 3 spans, its length is 97.5 meters and its width is 30.5 meters.

To note, in the last Iranian year, the transit of products through Iran amounted to 17.8 million tons. Transit of products through Iran increased by 36.5 percent compared to the previous year.
