Construction of Iran's Bushehr NPP decelerates

There were some delays in the construction of 2nd and 3rd units of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in Bushehr Province (southern Iran), due to the spread of the coronavirus in Iran, Executor of the project on construction of the 2nd and 3rd units of Bushehr NPP, Masoud Nasouri told IRIB, Trend reports.

The official emphasized that because adherence to health protocols is required.

"In general, there is an 8 percent physical progress in the construction of 2nd unit of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant," he added.

According to Nasouri, there is 82 percent progress in the foundation structure of the part where the main reactor of the 2nd unit is located.

Nasouri noted that in both units, 16,600 columns must be prepared on the foundation in the parts where the main reactor is located. The installation of concrete columns in the 2nd unit has been completed and there is 80 percent physical progress in the installation of concrete columns in 3rd unit.

"At present, 10 Iranian companies with 2,000 employees are operating in the construction of the 2nd and 3rd units of the nuclear power plant," he said.

A contract was signed in 2014 between the Iran Atomic Energy Production and Development Company and Russia's Atomstroyexport Company for the construction of 2nd and 3rd units of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant. The construction of the second unit of this nuclear power plant began in 2016. If the 2nd and 3rd units are put into operation, the NPP can generate 1,050 megawatts of electricity.

Electricity produced at the 1st power unit of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in Iran began to be delivered to the Iranian electricity grid on Sep. 3, 2011.

Since its commissioning, the first power unit of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant has generated about 43 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, which were handed over to the country's electricity grid.
