Rouhani: New anti-extremism co-op to emerge from Iran-West nuclear deal

Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 25

By Umid Niayesh - Trend:

A quite different situation will emerge in terms of regional and international cooperation, particularly in fighting violence and extremism, if the parties in nuclear talks reach an agreement, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said.

He made the remarks Sept. 25 while addressing the 69th Annual Meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York, Iranian news channel IRINN reported.

Speaking about the ongoing nuclear talks between Iran and the P5+1 (China, France, Russia, the UK, the U.S. and Germany), Rouhani expressed hope on reaching a comprehensive agreement prior to the Nov. 24 deadline.

He said Iran is committed to international rules and adheres to continuing nuclear talks based on mutual respect and to removing ambiguities.

The president stressed that Iran will continue its peaceful nuclear program under the international obligations.

Rouhani also called the Western sanctions "oppressive", but emphasized that the sanctions did not force Iran to negotiate with the West on the nuclear issue.

"Iranian nation started nuclear talks on its own will, not under the Western sanctions' pressure," he added.

President Rouhani also said the continuation of sanctions against Iran is prolonging a strategic mistake against an independent nation amid the region's critical conditions.

Rouhani underscored that the nuclear issue has only one solution - "the negotiations".

He went on to add that Iran is a land of peace and stability, noting that the Islamic Republic's policy is based on cooperation with neighboring countries.

Rouhani also touched upon the U.S.-led military operations against the terrorist organization known as the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIL or ISIS).

He called the U.S.-led anti-IS coalition a strategic mistake.

Rouhani said the West is making "strategic blunders" in the region, adding "their erroneous policies have turned the Middle East and Central Asia into a heaven for terrorists."

He also warned about the results of wrong approaches in fighting terrorism, adding that the terrorism has become globalized.

Rouhani said a proper solution to the problem of terrorism in the region can only originate from the region itself.
