The Iranian Navy has thwarted 11 pirate boat attacks on an Iranian merchant vessel sailing in Bab-el-Mandeb Strait.

Somalian pirates attempted to hijack an Iranian merchant ship but Iranian Navy’s 44th flotilla of warships interferred, and saved the ship, Tasnim news agency reported.

According to the report, the Navy’s flotilla is on an overseas mission patrolling the Gulf of Aden waters.

The report further added that the pirates were equipped with modern and expensive vessels such as refueling ships.

Since November 2008, the Iranian Navy has been conducting patrols in the Gulf of Aden in line with international efforts against piracy to safeguard merchant containers and oil tankers owned or leased by Iran or other countries.
