Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec.15

By Temkin Jafarov - Trend:

The air pollution level in Iran's capital Tehran is dangerous for all residents of the city, director general of Iran's Air Quality Control Organization Vahid Hosseini said.

He noted that the air pollution level in this city is seven times higher that the limit set by the World Health Organization, Iran's Mehr news agency reported.

The air pollution in Tehran is primarily caused by vehicles, according to Hosseini.

Currently, 40 percent of Tehran residents use public transport, while 60 percent use their own cars.

Earlier, Iran's ISNA news agency reported that over 4,000 people die each year in the city from diseases caused by air pollution.

Tehran is among the most polluted cities on the planet, according to foreign media outlets. Sometimes, classes and work of the organizations are suspended in this city due to the problems caused by air pollution.

Currently, Tehran's population is 12-13 million, according to the official data.
