Agriculture in Azerbaijan (as of 2016)

The agricultural production volume in actual prices amounted to 5,632.1 million manat in Azerbaijan in 2016 or by 2.6 percent more compared to 2015.

In particular, the production volume in plant cultivation amounted to 2,576.9 million manat, while - 3,055.2 million manat in livestock.

According to the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee’s report, the livestock production increased by 2.8 percent, crop production – 2.5 percent in the reporting period.

In particular, silkworm production increased by 300 times, soybeans - by 2.8 times, cotton - by 2.5 times, green tea leaves - by 75 percent, sugar beet - by 73 percent, rice – by 72 percent, potatoes - 7.5 percent in 2016.

A great impetus was given to sericulture as a result of the measures taken in 2016. Currently, sericulture is being developed in 37 districts. Azerbaijan solves all the necessary issues. Some 70 tons of raw cocoons were prepared in 2016.

According to the preliminary data, as of 2016, almost 3.1 million tons of grain were collected from a 997,500 hectare-territory, which is by 2.2 percent more than in 2015. On average, some 30.7 centners of products were collected from each hectare.

The corn yield increased in Azerbaijan.

Thus, the average yield per hectare increased by 2 centners and reached 61.2 centners compared to 2015.

Some 223,900 tons of corn were collected from a 35,700-hectare-area.

Some 60.5 percent of grain crops produced in 2016 accounted for wheat (1.854 million tons), 7.3 percent - corn (223,900 tons), 0.2 percent - rice hull (5,600 tons) and 32 percent - other cereals and leguminous plants (981,600 tons).

Some 902,400 tons of potatoes were collected during the reporting period (7.5 percent growth for the year) 1,269.3 million tons of vegetables (0.5 percent decrease), 464,600 tons of melons and gourds (4.1 percent decrease), 883,700 tons of fruits and berries (0.5 percent decrease), 134,500 tons of grapes (14.4 percent growth), 1,015.7 million tons of green tea leaves (75.4 percent growth), 321,300 tons of sugar beet (72.7 percent growth), 17,100 tons of sunflower (9.3 percent decrease), 3,598.2 million tons of tobacco leaves (3.8 percent growth).

As of December 26, some 87,240 tons cotton were collected, which is by 2.5 times more than in 2015 (35,190 tons).

Cotton was mainly harvested in the country’s Saatli district during the reporting period. Some 11,800 tons of cotton were harvested from an 8,110-hectare area.

In total, some 52,060 hectares were planted with cotton in 2016, or by 2.8 times more than in 2015.

Some 523,800 tons of meat in live weight, 2.01 million tons of milk, 1.61 billion pieces of eggs and 16,700 tons of wool were produced in 2016.

Meat production increased by 1.6 percent, milk - by 4.4 percent, eggs by 3.7 percent, wool production by 2.1 percent in the country in 2016 compared to 2015.
