NGO "St George Standard Bearers" appealed to Tbilisi mayor with the request to dismantle the St. George Statue on Freedom Square.

As the organization's head, Father Elizbar Diakonidze, said, the monument was created in a non- Orthodox style and should be dismantled.

"Its sculpture by Zurab Tsereteli does not represent the Orthodox style. No matter which angle one looks from, only a dragon can be seen", he said. According to Diakonidze, the statue should be replaced with a monument to 17 fighters who died heroically in the Shindisi village in 2008 on the Square.

Some 30,000 signatures have already been collected, demanding to dismantle the monument. The organization's members will gather in the Mtatsminda pantheon, from where a march to the square will begin and from where they will again demand the monument's dismantling on Aug. 30.
