An official at the Georgian Ministry of Defence responsible for the military servicemen's catering facilities has been dismissed. Personnel changes have also been made in the management of the Georgian Food Company that provides the armed forces with food.
Defence Minister Irakli Alasania took this decision after several soldiers of the third infantry brigade became ill with food poisoning. Up till now, 11 soldiers are undergoing medical examinations.
"To date, 11 soldiers are being examined in order to find out what poisoned them. Despite the fact that the poisoning was not widespread, I have decided to suspend the official who was responsible for the food safety of our military servicemen. The structure and management of the Georgian Food Company has also been completely changed," Alasania said.
A criminal case is being filed based on the facts surrounding the food poisoning at the Georgian Defence Ministry. The incident is under investigation.
