The Georgian Foreign Ministry expresses regret that despite the positive tendencies in economic and humanitarian spheres, Moscow has intensified provocative action aimed at destabilising the situation in Georgia.
Russia has resumed the construction of barbed wire fencing and trenches along the borders with the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali, which is a flagrant violation of international law and human rights norms, according to a statement made by Georgian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.
"The expansion of the area, construction of security fencing and barriers by Russia on Georgian territory, violates Georgia's sovereignty, its territorial integrity and inviolability of internationally recognised borders and is the flagrant violation of the ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008", according to a statement from the Georgian Foreign Ministry.
In addition, the Foreign Ministry states that five years after the war of 2008, the remaining goal of the Georgian government is a peaceful settlement of the conflict through negotiations based on fundamental principles of international law.
Large scale military action was launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.
Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognised republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
