The Georgian leadership didn't take any measures to start direct dialogue with the leaders of Abkhazia and so called South Ossetia, the leader of Democratic Movement and presidential candidate Nino Burjanadze said.

"Probably there was an opportunity for our meeting with the leader of Abkhazia during the past 10 months, or at least we could have made such a proposal.

"Why didn't we think about it? Or why didn't we think that senior officials from the Georgian leadership started direct dialogue with Vladimir Putin? I wish at least there was a meeting between the foreign ministers which would create groundwork for the meeting of the Georgian and Abkhazian parties," Burjanadze said on Caucasia TV, whilst commenting on the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the de-facto head of the occupied Abkhazia, Alexander Ankvab.

Large scale military action was launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.

Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognised republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
