Two foreign skiers died as a result of avalanches in Georgia's mountainous region of Svaneti and the search for another two is continuing at present, the Ushguli village administration reported on March 7. The village is acknowledged as being the highest mountainous one in Europe.

Both the dead are nationals of France and Germany. The skiers who skied on unbroken line on the Ushguli - Kvemo pass to Svaneti were hit by an avalanche. One tourist out of the five survived, two died and two others are still missing.

The rescue operation began a few hours ago. Three skiers are French citizens, the other two are German.

The tourists had been in the area since March 2. They received warnings of the danger of avalanches from frontier guards. Nevertheless they went to the mountains, according to the village administration.
