BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 15. The German Government through Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is assisting Georgia in modernization of urban transport system, a source in GIZ told Trend.

Since 2020, Germany through the "Sustainable Urban Mobility in the South Caucasus" (Mobilty4Cities) project, has been continuously supporting local city administrations in Tbilisi and Batumi to shift to a more sustainable mode of mobility.

"Mobility4Cities has prepared several projects, including preparation of traffic concept for the main arterial corridor in Tbilisi, Improvement of Traffic Impact Assessment methodologies, cycling masterplans and safe way to school concepts for Tbilisi and Batumi, walkability and parking strategy for Batumi," the GIZ said.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic was one of the biggest obstacles while implementing of full-fledged activities that had a negative impact on the joint regional activities.

"Nevertheless, all the challenges have been assessed very carefully, and mitigation measures have been put in place to ensure the smooth implementation of the program," the agency added.

Meanwhile, this year, Georgia and Germany are celebrating 30 years of establishment of diplomatic ties between two countries.
