Jordan's King Abdullah II on Wednesday welcomed the formation of a new Iraqi government as an "important step" in the process of the country's national reconciliation, according to a royal court statement, dpa reported.

"The formation of the new Iraqi government represents an important step in the process of bolstering the country's democracy, national reconciliation, security and stability," the monarch was said to have written in a cable to Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

King Abdullah renewed Jordan's pledge of support for neighbouring Iraq in its endeavours to "confront various challenges," and once again expressed keenness to boost the cooperation between the two countries, the statement said.

The new Iraqi government, a coalition comprising all of the key political groupings that swept the March elections, was formed on Tuesday after nine months of political deadlock.
