Baghdad's mayor submits his resignation after protests

Baghdad Mayor Saber Issawi submitted his resignation on Thursday, following weeks of nationwide protests for local officials to resign amid allegations of corruption, dpa reported.

He is the third Iraqi mayor to submit his resignation since last Friday's "Day of Rage" protests, following those of the mayors in Basra and al-Hilla.

Nationwide protests, planned again for this Friday, rocked the capital Baghdad and several cities last week as thousands of Iraqis protested to call for an end to corruption and the removal of several local council members nationwide.

Clashes with security in protests left 18 people dead and more than 140 injured last Friday, security and medical sources said.

Demonstrations and protests have already forced Maliki to call for local elections to be held earlier than the scheduled time frame of 2013.

Government sources told the German Press Agency dpa that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has not yet announced his acceptance of Issawi's resignation, who has been in the post since 2005.
