Egyptian ambassador urges Palestinian groups not to give up Cairo's unity proposal

Egyptian ambassador to the Palestinian territories Yasser Othman called upon Palestinian factions not to give up an Egyptian-drafted proposal for national reconciliation, Xinhua reported.

Palestinian Al-Ayyam newspaper quoted the ambassador as saying on Monday that the proposal was the result of "more Palestinian effort than an Egyptian one."

"This Palestinian effort should not be bypassed," Othman said, warning that progress made through months of dialogue between the factions would be lost.

The Islamic Hamas movement, which rejected the plan in 2009, said the "Egyptian paper" has been something of the past, especially after the protests that forced Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to step down last month.

Othman said the plan aims to bring the Gaza Strip back to the rule of the Palestinian National Authority and secure the lifting of an Israeli siege on the coastal enclave.

In 2007, the Hamas routed forces loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas and ousted his Fatah movement in the Gaza Strip.

The Hamas has raised several reservations on issues related to security, elections and the reform of Palestine Liberation Organization in the Egyptian plan.
