Syrian government forces killed at least three people in the restive city of Homs on Friday, as opposition activists called for pro-democracy protests on the weekly day of prayer dpa reported

"Heavy shelling targeted the neighbourhood of Baba Amr in Homs killing at least three and injuring 10," an activist told dpa.

The shelling by tanks started early Friday to prevent people from leaving their homes to participate in the planned demonstrations, said the activist, who asked not to be named.

Online activists called on Syrians to take to the streets on Friday in peaceful protests to test the government's acceptance of an Arab League plan to halt violence in the country.

More than 3,000 people have been killed, including at least 187 children, in the government's clampdown on protests since they started in mid-March, according to the United Nations.
