Tens of thousands of Yemenis rallied across the country on Friday, demanding authorities to bring to justice officials suspected of involvement in killing peaceful protesters during a pro-democracy uprising, dpa reported.

The demonstrators, gathering in 18 provinces across the Arabian Peninsula country, blamed former President Ali Abdullah Saleh and officials from his regime for killing hundreds of protesters against his 33-year rule.

Saleh agreed to step down in November under a Gulf-brokered power transfer deal in return for immunity from prosecution.

His deputy Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi took office as new president last month.

"I am sure that the day will come when the killers will be put on trial. But until this happens, we will continue to hold demonstrations," said Sami al-Mtari, a protester in the capital Sana'a.

Yemeni media has recently quoted Minister of Human Rights Huria Mashhur as estimating that more than 2,000 people were killed in the protests that started in January 2011 against Saleh's rule.
