Campaigning began on Sunday for Algeria's parliamentary election, which will take place on May 10, dpa reported.
The Interior Ministry said 44 parties and 211 independent candidates will compete for 462 seats in parliament.
Some 500 international observers will monitor the vote next month. Campaigning runs until May 6.
Algeria, which produces gas and oil, has been largely immune to the Arab Spring uprisings that toppled leaders in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.
