4 million Syrians will soon need humanitarian aid - UN

The number of Syrians who need international aid will climb from 2.5 million to 4 million by the end of the year if the current level of violence continues, senior UN emergency relief official John Ging told a donors meeting on Friday in Geneva, dpa reported.

"This is not a worst-case scenario but a logical prediction," said Jens Laerke, spokesman of Ging's United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Ging, who is OCHA's operations chief, also called on Gulf countries to finally start donating money and to help fund the 191 million dollars still required to help all Syrians in need.

Laerke said Gulf countries have in the past indicated that they would help Syrians, but pointed out that none of these governments made pledges at Friday's Geneva meeting.
