Series of blasts rock Iraq - 17 dead, 80 wounded

At least 17 people were killed and 80 wounded in a series of bombings in several areas of Baghdad, state-media reported late Monday.

The blasts targeted areas in central and eastern Baghdad, according to al Sumariya TV.

Three car bombs exploded in the areas of Neiari, Al Rashaad and Al Hussienyeh, the report said, while a bomb went off in Karada, in central Baghdad, inflicting casualties, dpa reported.

The deadliest attack, according to the Iraqi National News Agency, was when a car bomb exploded near an outdoor market in the Shiite suburb of Nahrawan, killing four civilians and wounding 15.

A few minutes later, another car bomb went off near a market in the Shiite neighborhood of New Baghdad, killing three people and wounding 10, the agency reported.

The attacks are the latest in a wave of violence in recent months amid mass protests by minority Sunni Muslims against Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's Shiite-led government.

The United Nations reported that 1,045 people, mostly civilians and police, were killed in May in Iraq, making it the deadliest month in the country since 2008.
