Clashes between the supporters of the ousted President Mohammed Morsi and the military and the police took place on Thursday at the An-Nahda area near the University of Cairo, RIA Novosti reported with reference to the Egyptian media.
Several demonstrators climbed on armored vehicles and started shouting slogans against the army command. The military were forced to open fire in the air to disperse the demonstrators.
In turn, the police detained a man with an improvised explosive device.
Several thousand Islamists have settled on the Al-Nahda square, setting the platform, where their leaders periodically deliver speeches. They have also blocked all the approaches to the square. Egyptian police and army have surrounded the square, not letting in the demonstrators.
