The Egyptian army killed six insurgents in a gunfight in the volatile Sinai Peninsula, a security official said Thursday, dpa reported.

The fighting occurred late Wednesday near a security checkpoint in the northern Sinai city of Al-Arish, added the official on condition of anonymity.

No casualties were reported among the army.

The Sinai has seen an upsurge in violence since the army deposed Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in July after massive street protests against his one-year role.

Almost daily attacks against security forces in Sinai continue despite a military campaign against suspected militant Islamists, which began more than a month ago.
