The wife of Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak is expected to be indicted next week on charges of breaking the labour law by employing a foreign worker who was in the country illegally, Israeli media reported Thursday night.
If convicted, Mrs Barak, who goes under the name of Nili Priel, will have to pay a fine of 100,000 shekels (28,000 dollars) or face imprisonment, dpa reported.
Priel and the foreign worker both attended a meeting at the immigration authority last November, after which it was decided to charge her.
Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein decided not to charge Barak himself, saying there was not enough evidence to link the defence minister to the hiring of the foreign worker, a Filipina woman named Virginia.
Barak and Priel married in 2007. It was the second marriage for both, but they had known each other for more than 40 years.
