Hong Kong shivers through one of coldest weeks on record
( dpa ) - Hong Kong registered one of its coldest weeks on record with more bad weather on the way, observatory officials said Sunday.
Temperatures fell to 8 degrees Celsius Saturday forcing the former British colony to hoist a cold weather warning for the tenth day running.
The last time Hong Kong was affected by persistent cold weather was in 2004 when the cold weather warning was issued for 8.5 days.
Meteorologists blamed the weather on the winter monsoon and moist air from the south causing low temperatures and rain, and warned that more cold days were expected over the coming Chinese New Year holiday which begins on Thursday February 7.
Bad weather in the region has sent temperatures plummeting in China which is suffering the worst snowstorms in half a century.
Rail, road and air traffic in most of southern, eastern and central China has been crippled by the storms, stranding millions of people. At least 60 deaths have been reported.
