( dpa ) - At least five civilians were injured on Sunday when mortar shells hit the Iraqi city of Kut about 150 kilometres southeast of Baghdad, media reports said.

Two residential areas in the city were hit by five mortar shells in the early hours of Sunday, leaving three Iraqis seriously injured, police told the Voices of Iraq (VOI) news agency. Sources said troops were deployed across the city to investigate the attack.

Two weeks earlier, the city of Kut witnessed intense clashes between militants and the Iraqi forces, leaving at least 11 dead and 40 injured, including women and children.

Meanwhile, a rocket also struck a house in Baghdad's Karada district, wounding two civilians and damaging near-by houses, VOI said. The injured were moved to hospital after the blast.
