It may sound like a joke but it isn't - Volvo is offering its stylish C30 hatchback with all over zebra-stripes, polka dots or pink camouflage. ( dpa )

The decoration comes in the form of applique film which covers the entire bodywork. It is removable and helps protect the paintwork underneath, says Volvo on its Swedish-language website. The finish lasts for about two years after which it can be replaced with another design.

Around 20 different stickers are available, including one with little fluffy clouds on a blue background. There are flames, butterflies, Scots tartan and the mock wood panelling effect beloved of US manufacturers in the 1950s. Rural motifs include trees and weeds.

Love it or loathe it, Volvo's Thomas Andersson calls the cosmetic makeover "an ideal way of making your car unique". Thanks to the new colour options the C30 now comes in 12,314 permutations, he added.

Buyers can configure their new hatchback using a dedicated website at www.volvoc30.se.
