( dpa ) - Atletico Madrid late Sunday announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Paulo Assuncao from FC Porto.
It is not clear how much Atletico will pay Porto for the 28-year- old, who has invoked article 17 of the FIFA statutes to unilaterally cancel his contract.
Atletico have declared that they are "trying to reach a friendly agreement" with the Portuguese club.
Assuncao is Atletico's fifth summer signing, after Gregory Coupet (Lyon), Florent Sinama Pongolle (Recreativo Huelva), John Heitinga ( Ajax) and Tomas Ujfalusi (Fiorentina).
