Nepal's first president, Ram Baran Yadav, was formally sworn into office Wednesday, two days after his election, reported dpa.
Yadav was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Nepalese Chief Justice Kedar Prasad Giri during a special ceremony in the Nepalese capital.
Yadav then administered the oath of office and secrecy to the vice president, Parmananda Jha.
Yadav, 61, defeated Maoist candidate Ramraja Prasad Singh on Monday's presidential run off and will now take on some of the ceremonial duties which was carried out by former king Gyanendra.
Nepal's monarchy was abolished by an overwhelming vote in the country's constituent assembly on May 28.
The presidential election has sparked off a fresh political crisis, with the Maoists accusing the Nepali Congress of trying to prevent it from leading the government.
The Maoists have also announced they would not stake claim to form a new government despite being the single biggest party in the assembly.
Both Yadav and Vice President Jha are from ethnic Madhesi community, which has strong representation in the south of the country.
The swearing in of a president caps Nepal's moves towards peace following the end of Maoist insurgency two and half years ago.
