Star New Zealand radio and television sports reporter Tony Veitch appeared in court Monday in Auckland on seven charges of assaulting his former partner, the dpa reported.

Veitch, 34, was remanded on bail until September 29 on six counts of assaulting a woman and one of injuring Kristin Dunne-Powell with reckless disregard for her safety, a charge carrying a five-year prison sentence.

His attorney told the court that all the charges, relating to offences alleged to have occurred from 2002 to January 2006, would be "strenuously defended."

Veitch, who was to have fronted Television New Zealand's coverage of the Beijing Olympics, resigned after allegations of the assaults on Dunne-Powell were published last month. His wife, Zoe Halford, was in court to support him, news reports said.
