Ukraine Expects UN International Court Decision at Early 2009

Ukraine, Kiev, 23 September/ Trend , corr Z. Novosvitski/ Ukraine expects UN International Court to issue a decision on its territorial dispute with Romania not later than January to February 2009, representative of Ukraine in UN International Court Vladimir Vasilenko said.

The hearings from both sides have already been completed, he said.

Vasilenko said Romania has appealed the court claiming that Snake Island in the Black Sea is not an island, but a rock. On its part, Ukraine claims that Snake Island is an island and length of Ukrainian part of the shore makes up 1,058km and Romanian part ї 258km. Kiev says disputed territories of the shelf must be divided in a proportion of one third: 53,300km for Kiev and 21,000km for Romania, he said.

Vasilenko said he believes court will issue a balanced and compromise decision.
