Federal authorities say the U.S. has extradited to Mexico a freelance photographer suspected of stabbing his estranged wife to death in Mexico City, the Associated Press reported.

The federal Attorney General's office said in a statement Saturday that Sergio Dorantes would be turned over to Mexico City prosecutors who accuse him of killing Alejandra Perez in 2003.

Perez was found with a knife lodged in her neck in Newsweek magazine's offices in Mexico City, where she worked as an administrator.

Dorantes denies killing his wife.

Dorantes' work has appeared in publications including Newsweek magazine and the New York Times.
