Palestinian militants fire five rockets at Israel

Other News Materials 18 December 2008 12:35 (UTC +04:00)

Palestinian militants fired five makeshift rockets at southern Israel early Thursday morning, hours after the Israel Air Force attacked what it said were weapons factories in the Gaza Strip, reported dpa.

There were no reports of injuries in either the rocket attacks or the Israeli airstrikes.

A Palestinian man was killed in the Gaza Strip Wednesday evening during an Israeli strike on the northern part of the salient, which came after militants fired more than 30 mortars and rockets at southern Israel during the day.

The latest violence comes a day before a six-month truce between Israel and the Palestinian militias in the Gaza Strip is due to end.

The Islamic Hamas movement, which administers the strip, has intimated that it will not extend the truce, and Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni has said that "if there is calm ... there will be calm in return, but if Israeli citizens are attacked, Israel will respond forcefully in order to protect them."
