Heavy rains sparked flooding Tuesday in northern Spain, while another death increased the number of fatalities claimed by storms to 16, officials and hospital sources said, dpa reported.

A 53-year-old man died at a Tarragona hospital on Monday after a wind gust pulled him down from his balcony on Saturday, hospital sources said.

The death toll thus climbed to 16 since Friday for the entire country.

Rainwater flooded basements and garages in several places in the Cantabria and Basque regions, disrupting traffic.

Two rivers overflowed their banks in Cantabria, while several schools and other public buildings were evacuated in the Basque city of Bilbao for fear that the river Nervion would do the same.

In north-eastern Catalonia, about 3,500 households remained without electricity.
