American and Iraqi security forces have seized an arms and munitions dump during a recent sweep west of the Iraqi capital city, Baghdad, Press TV reported.
"After receiving a tip from an Iraqi citizen, Iraqi Security Forces and Multi-National Division - Baghdad soldiers discovered a large cache in the Aqur Quf area west of Baghdad, May 19," Voices of Iraq reported.
The Iraqi news agency also noted that the cache consisted of 18 rocket-propelled grenade warheads, forty-four 60mm mortar rounds, 31 RPG motors, one set of binoculars, 100 feet of detonation cord, six RPG launchers, one 60mm mortar base plate, one Motorola cell phone attached to military grade explosives and one RKG-3 anti-armor grenade.
An explosive ordinance disposal team was called to the site to safely conduct a controlled detonation and also transport some of the weapons to a secure location for further investigation.
Iraq has been the scene of bomb blasts and deadly fighting ever since US-led forces invaded the oil-rich country in March 2003. The sectarian bloodshed as well as insurgency unleashed by the US-led invasion has also driven some 4m Iraqis from their homes.
