Afghan forces in clashes with Taliban insurgents arrested five local commanders of the outfit over the past two days in northern province of Baghlan and southern Uruzgan province, officials said Thursday, reported Xinhua.
The troops captured Taliban commander Mullah Aziz during an operation against insurgents in the relatively peaceful Baghlan province on Wednesday, said military officer Abdul Ahad Khan.
Mullah Aziz, the officer added, had acted as commander of Taliban fighters in Baghlan-e-Markazi district and was involved in carrying out series of subversive activities.
In another incident, four more local Taliban commanders namely Mullah Lala, Mullah Hanan, Mullah Rabbani and Mullah Mujahid were arrested in the southern Uruzgan province, commander of the troops in the region Shir Mohammad Zazi said.
However, Taliban fighters have not made any comment.
Afghan security forces supported by international troops have intensified their effort to clear anti-government militants who have vowed to disrupt the coming presidential elections.
