Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will come to Poland on Sept. 1 to attend ceremonies marking the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of WWII, local media reported on Sunday, according to Xinhua.
The Russian Embassy in Warsaw has officially confirmed Putin's upcoming visit, according to Polish news agency PAP.
According to the embassy, while in Poland Putin will meet with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The ceremonies, to be held in Westerplatte near Gdansk, will be attended by Polish President Lech Kaczynski, Donald Tusk and other foreign guests, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
On Sept. 1, 1939, the German Schleswig-Holstein warship opened fire on a Polish military depot in Westerplatte. The shelling of Westerplatte was long considered to have been the first episode in the German Nazi aggression on Poland that started WWII.
