A student drowned and four others are still missing after a dragon boat capsized on Sunday morning in northwestern Malaysian state of Penang, police said.

The boat carrying 18 students capsized at around 8:00 am local time on Sunday when they tried to turn the boat around after encountering strong waves, according to the police, Xinhua reported.

Local police officer Gan Kong Meng said the students, aged 16 or 17, were training for a dragon boat race in waters about 500 meters off the coast on east side of George Town, Penang. 12 students swam to shore, he added.

He said that preliminary investigation showed that several students had not worn life jackets.

A search-and-rescue team comprising personnel from various security units and the Civil Defense Department were scouring the sea for the missing students, he said.
